Travelogue: By Country | By Date Tibet | June 2001

This is part of the Summer Palace of the Dalai Lamas. It's a nice place but is most interesting because this is where the current Dalai Lama was living before his escape to India. In 1959, after the Chinese seemed about to take the Dalai Lama prisoner, 30,000 Tibetans surrounded the palace determined to prevent the Dalai Lama from falling into Chinese hands. In the popular uprising that followed the Dalai Lama's escape, the Chinese shelled most of these buildings.
