Large statue of Hanuman. Hanuman is a central figure in the great Hindu epic the Ramayana ("Romance of Rama"). Among other heroic episodes, with a host of monkeys, he aided Rama in recovering his wife, Sita, from the demon Ravana. Many temples, shrines and statues are dedicated to Hanuman. Because he was devoted to Rama, Hanuman is upheld as a model for human devotion to god. Hanuman is also a popular deity in Japan.
